Half Court Shots Galore!
As most of us already know, a lucky member of the crowd is chosen at half-time to take a half-court shot for a special prize. Serious cash prizes can be won depending on how generous the person running the contest is.In February of this year, Mike Truder, a LA reporter, reported on The Mirage Big Shot Jackpot Contest at the end of the third quarter during L.A.'s victory over Atlanta. In his report a very lucky man by the name of Robert Ward lined up from half-court for a chance at $165,000 and made it. How about that!
The story didn’t end there. Robert Ward is a 23-year-old Mission Viejo native, who at the time was a senior at USC and he said that he would use the money to pay off college loans. His shot got some post-shot reaction from Vujacic, Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom. The contest was sponsored by Mirage which is The Official Las Vegas Destination for the Los Angeles Lakers.
February seemed to be the month for half court shots as a jeweler awarded $25K to a winner in Albany, NY. According to an article from the National Jeweler, on February 22, Brendan Bradt made a “high profit” half-court shot to win the "Northeastern Fine Jewelry $25,000 Shooting Stars" contest. This took place at a Siena men’s basketball game. Northeastern Fine Jewelry President Ray Bleser said this in a media release:
"This couldn't have happened to a nicer young man," The minute the ball left his hands, my son-in-law Gregg turned to me and said, 'It's going in.' You dream of being able to sign the check for this type of contest, but honestly you're never really sure that moment will ever come." However there is one question that must be answered.
